Dealing with your scalp and hair with Psoriasis: Effective care and treatment tips

Psoriasis on the scalp can be particularly challenging due to the presence of hair which often makes it difficult to treat and care for the affected areas. The scales may build up thicker and the irritation can be persistent. Effective scalp psoriasis management requires a tailored approach, specific hair routines and treatment that address these challenges.

At Regis, your expert stylist will analyse your hair & scalp and be able to prescribe recommend the best in-salon treatments and at-home care.

Your Regis stylist may refer you to your GP or certified trichologist if they feel you need further treatment.

Understanding Psoriasis on the scalp

Scalp psoriasis is a form of plaque psoriasis occurring on the scalp, often presenting as red, raised patches covered with white, silvery scales. These plaques can appear anywhere on the scalp, including the hairline, behind the ears and sometimes extending beyond this to the forehead or neck areas.

Itching and mild hair shedding might start before visible signs develop. Silvery scales that cling tightly to the scalp or around hair tufts help distinguish psoriasis from other scalp irritations. The condition can vary from mild flaking (like dandruff) to severe, thick scaling that may cause itching and soreness. Scalp psoriasis can be persistent and may require ongoing treatment to control symptoms.

It is unknown what causes the condition but certain triggers such as stress, skin damage, cold weather, illness and bacterial infection.  It can also be triggered using certain medications. Using harsh hair care products or scratching at the area can also exacerbate symptoms.

It is important to seek medical advice from a GP or professional trichologist if problems persist. They will be able to perform a medical diagnosis to differentiate these conditions so it can be diagnosed correctly and be provided with the best course of treatment.

Caring for your scalp with psoriasis

Managing scalp psoriasis requires targeted care that reduces irritation and prevents worsening symptoms. Selecting the right at home care suited for scalp psoriasis is essential.

When cleansing the hair with shampoo, it is important to be as gentle as possible. Use lukewarm water, not hot as hot water can dry out the skin even further and worsen itching or redness. Massage into the scalp with your fingertips, not nails. Prevent vigorous scratching or scrubbing. Rinse any product from the hair thoroughly to remove all residue from products, this can cause build-up in the scalp and trigger discomfort. Pat the scalp dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing to reduce irritation

Flaking from psoriasis plaques can build up on the hair and scalp and can be uncomfortable, so regular removal is important. Using scalp oils or treatments will make them easier to remove.

Environmental factors like sun exposure and harsh weather can dry out both hair and scalp, worsening psoriasis symptoms. Wearing hats or scarves outdoors provides a physical barrier against these elements.

If flakes become excessive, consult your Regis stylist, who may be able to prescribe and recommend other products or treatment more suitable; in some cases, they may also recommend you seek specialised medical advice.
