The right way to layer products in your haircare routine

With many types of hair products available, sometimes it can be difficult to understand what is best for your hair and scalp type and more importantly the correct order the products should be applied. These tips can help you prevent for unnecessary weigh-down and help your hair and scalp become the healthiest it has ever been.

What is the best haircare routine for your hair type?

You won’t get much out of your haircare routine if you aren’t first selecting the right products for your hair and scalp type. Firstly, assess your hair. Coloured hair or permed hair tends to require different formulas. Another factor to consider is your hair porosity (how does your hair absorb and retain moisture?). Low porosity hair is often more resistant to absorbing haircare products whereas high porosity hair tends to be dry, frizzy and quick to air-dry. Finally, determine your hair type can help you create a better routine. Here are some of the main hair types:

-Straight
-Wavy
-Curly
-Coily

How to properly layer your haircare products.

Applying your products in the right order, consistently allows each formula to build upon the other. If they are applied in the wrong order this can prevent products from absorbing and functioning as intended. Depending on your hair type you may not need to use every product at once either. Find a good routine that you can be consistent with that aligns with your hair goals.

  1. Pre-shampoo
Pre-shampoos are optional but can help set your haircare routine up for success. They are designed and formulated to protect your hair and scalp before you even step into the shower. Pre-shampoos may also help address more specific concerns like oiliness, dryness, breakage or damage. Some pre-shampoos can be used on their own or they need to specifically be layered with a corresponding shampoo. Check the usage instructions of your pre-shampoo to ensure the best possible results.

  2. Shampoo
Proper shampooing helps purify your hair and scalp so the rest of your products in your routine can absorb and perform effectively. Gently work the recommended amount of shampoo onto your scalp in circular motions. Massaging your scalp is key to help lift away build up. Let the lather work through your mid-lengths to the end of your hair. Shampoo your hair twice. The first time lifts away any dirt and build up. The second, makes sure it is washed away for a clean and healthy scalp.

  3. Hair Mask
These are optional and don't have to be used every time you wash your hair. A hair mask can be applied if your hair is lacking moisture and is damaged. Using them once a week is enough if your hair needs it. Apply a hair mask before conditioning and leave it in for the recommended time to allow for the full benefits to work on your hair.

  4. Conditioner
We would recommend using the same conditioner from the same line as your shampoo to experience the full benefits from their formula and ingredients. When applying your conditioner focus on the mid-lengths to ends of your hair and avoid your roots and scalp. Conditioners are designed to moisturise the hair where it needs it most and can weigh down your scalp and cause build up. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for the recommended time before washing out.

  5. Leave in treatments
After you have stepped out the shower, it is time to apply any leave in treatments. The choice of leave in treatment depends on your hair goals and needs. Use something that works for you and helps protect and strengthen your hair.

  6. Heat protection
This should be the final step before applying any heat to your hair. Heat protection needs to be in direct contact with any heat to activate. Products such as creams or oils can offer some form of protection, but it is always best to use a dedicated heat protector before using heat of any kind.

  7. Hair oil or serum
A hair oil or serum should come last in your routine. Hair oils can add extra moisture or shine when needed. Hair serum on the other hand can tame frizz and smooth the hair. Again, these are optional and will depend on the desired look and finish you would like for your hair.

  8. Finishing sprays
Exactly as the name suggests, a finish spray will finish off your entire look. This step can be a hairspray or texturizing spray. Either one of these should be applied at the end of your routine when your hair is fully dry and styled. Using these products on wet or damp hair is a no go and can cause stickiness and residue to build up on the hair. Just like your skin, your hair needs SPF too, especially when in direct sunlight.

Your hair routine should be tailored to you and your hair type. Make sure you purchase the correct products for your routine and what you want your end goal to be.
