SHOULD I VISIT THE SALON BEFORE OR AFTER MY HOLIDAY?

Summer is calling which means beach days, BBQs, garden parties, festivals and so many opportunities to make the most amazing memories. We cannot wait! But despite all the good that summer brings, the sun, sea, and chlorine can take a toll on your hair.

Your hair can become dry, frizzy, and break easily if you’re not caring for it the way you need to during the hotter months – especially if you have colour treated hair. Which is why we’re here to give you top tips from our professionals and our Creative Director, Kieron Fowles, on what you can do to achieve healthy looking and feeling locks this summer.

OUR SUMMER HAIRCARE GUIDE

1. REFRESH YOUR COLOUR

You may be wondering... Should I visit the salon before or after my holiday? If you want to look your best on your tropical getaway, you can have your hair coloured up until the day you go. If you do, we'd recommend booking yourself in for an interim service for when you're back to refresh your hair and remove any dull or brassy tones.

Interim services are perfect for guests who don’t want their usual full service but need a pick me up over the summer months. This will help to prolong your salon colour for another 6 weeks! Whether you’re heading to a festival, jetting to Ibiza, or attending a summer wedding… these are perfect to prolong your summer glow.

2. WEAR A HAT

What we know is whilst the sun may darken your skin, it may lighten your colour, so you’ll want to protect your hair and scalp as much as you protect your skin. And the easiest way to do that, is to wear a hat. A simple and quick (and stylish!) solution to protect your hair and scalp from UV rays.

We definitely recommend it for our fair-haired kings and queens. You can even pop in a few products such as oils or a leave in conditioner and allow the hair to regain lost moisture whilst it’s hidden away in the shade.

3. USE HAIR UV PROTECTION

Your skin is not the only thing that needs protecting from the sun! Your hair and most importantly, your scalp, will require UV protection to bounce back harmful sun rays and keep hair nourished. We recommend Invigo Sun Care for Hair – an essential power trio for your holidays.

The kit contains a shampoo, conditioner, and colour protection spray, all of which contain vitamin E & pro-vitamin B5 to help protect and moisturise hair before, during, and after sun exposure.

INVIGO SUN - AFTER SUN SHAMPOO

This after sun shampoo gently cleanses the hair after sand, sea, and salt exposure.

4. RINSE HAIR THOROUGHLY AFTER SWIMMING

After a day on the beach or in the pool, the hair can contain a build-up of chlorine, salt, and sand which can strip away moisture and make it rather brittle and dry. Not good when you’re later on trying to style it! We recommend thoroughly cleansing the hair and scalp with either Invigo Sun Care for Hair or selected Paul Mitchell products.

These will help to break down any elemental build up and nourish the hair for a silkier, smoother finish. It may also be best to wash your hair twice – the first time to remove the build-up, and the second to cleanse.

PAUL MITCHELL SHAMPOO THREE

For our water babies, this needs to be in your summer hair care collection.  This shampoo deep cleanses to remove chlorine, iron, and minerals so if you’re a regular swimmer, we recommend using this twice a week.

Not only will it remove future build up, but it will also remove any impurities which are altering the tone of your hair so you can wave goodbye to that dreadful chlorine green.

PAUL MITCHELL INSTANT MOISTURE TREATMENT

The ultimate holiday duo – this treatment will be perfect to pair with shampoo number three. As the shampoo works to remove all build up, you will need something that will resupply the nutrients your hair needs.

This treatment will work deep down into the hair shaft to supply soy proteins and vitamin E. This will help to hydrate and protect the hair for a healthier finish.

5. USE NOURISHING OILS OVERNIGHT OR BEFORE STYLING

Once you’re done with the cleansing part of your routine, we highly recommend running some nourishing oils through your hair, – especially if you’re planning on using heated tools to style.

The oil will help to replenish your hair and you’ll likely find that your styler will glide much easier through your hair. Here are some of our recommendations:

WELLA WEDO NATURAL OIL FOR HAIR

With its luxurious blend of natural oils including macadamia and sweet almond oils, this formula will leave hair frizz-free, and silky soft. It’s a bonus that you can also apply it to your skin for an overall evening holiday glow.

OLAPLEX NO.7 BONDING OIL

Not only will this oil supply nourishment to help repair dry and damaged hair, but it will also add an instant glossy shine to your locks.  This will help when it comes to styling as hair will be more manageable, less frizzy, and will look much healthier for a sleeker look and feel.

KERASTASE ELIXIR ULTIME OIL

Containing precious oils such as argan oil, maize oil, camellia oil, and pracaxi oil, this formula will leave hair looking radiant and feeling silky soft. Not only does it work as a heat protectant, but it will also help to smooth the hair fibre for long-lasting frizz control and will seal the appearance of split ends, so you can have that salon-fresh feel wherever you are.
