HOW TO TREAT CHLORINE DAMAGED HAIR

HOW TO TREAT CHLORINE DAMAGED HAIR

Chlorine is a common culprit behind hair damage, especially during the summer months when swimming pools become a frequent escape. While a dip in the pool is refreshing, the chlorine used to keep the water clean can leave your hair dry, brittle, and discoloured.

So, whether you’re a long-term swimmer or a water baby that simply cannot stay out of the pool while on holiday, don’t worry. We’re here with our top tips on how you can restore your hair’s health and shine after exposure to chlorine.

HOW DOES CHLORINE AFFECT YOUR HAIR?

Firstly, let’s get into exactly why chlorine can be bad for your hair. Chlorine is used in swimming pools to kill harmful microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, ensuring our health is protected. However, this powerful chemical can have damaging effects on hair. Chlorine strips natural oils from hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and prone to tangling. Prolonged exposure can lead to split ends, breakage, and a rough texture. Additionally, chlorine can cause scalp irritation, making it flaky and dehydrated. It can also react with hair dye, causing discolouration, particularly in lighter shades.

The good news is that your hair can recover from chlorine damage so long as you’re taking the correct steps to treat it. Here’s what our stylists recommend:

1. RINSE YOUR HAIR WITH CLEAN WATER AFTER SWIMMING

First things first, give your hair a good rinse as soon as you get out of the pool. Fresh water will help wash away the chlorine before it can do any serious damage. Think of it as giving your hair a quick detox!

2. GET YOURSELF A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO

Clarifying shampoos are designed to remove build-up from hair products and environmental factors, including chlorine. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to deeply cleanse your hair. However, be cautious not to overuse it, as it can strip your hair’s natural oils. Browse our summer holiday shop now to find your shampoo saviour.

3. APPLY A LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER FOR EXTENDED MOISTURE

A leave-in conditioner can provide an additional layer of protection and hydration. Apply it to damp hair after washing to keep it hydrated and protected. This is especially handy if you're hitting the pool often – just leave it in and let it work its magic.

4. INVEST IN A HAIR MASK FOR DEEP CONDITIONING

Hair masks are like a spa day for your hair and scalp. They’re a perfect solution to help deliver intensive moisture and nutrients to your dried out strands. You could even apply a mask and create a snatched ponytail or bun for a cute, yet effective poolside look. Get pics for the gram and treat your hair at the same time!

5. AVOID THE HEAT - USE A HEAT PROTECTANT!

By this, we don’t mean to sit in the shade. We’re talking about heated tools. Chlorine-damaged hair is more susceptible to further damage from heat styling. Try to minimise the use of hairdryers, straighteners, and curling irons. You could always try out some heatless hairstyles like plaits to gain effortless beach waves, a slicked-back wet look, or a cute updo with a claw clip. If heated tools are an absolute necessity for your hair look, make sure you’re ALWAYS using a heat protect spray beforehand to reduce the risk of damage. Your hair will thank you later!

6. ASK THE EXPERTS TO ASSESS YOUR HAIR TYPE AND DISCUSS YOUR CONCERNS

If your hair is really struggling and nothing seems to be working for you, it might be time to call in the pros. It could be that you’re not using the correct products for your hair type and need a professional hair stylist to assess your hair and needs so that they can recommend the best solution for you.
